POLYMATH

A new kind of recital.

Art, like nature, contains multitudes. The art song recital has always celebrated music and poetry, but this series asks the question of what happens when the boundaries of an individual artist’s role are deconstructed. Sung poetry, piano, spoken prose, and visual art come together to celebrate the capacity of the human mind.

The inaugural project is titled La comédie de la mort: named for Theophile Gautier’s 1838 collection of poetry investigating the many personifications of death throughout culture and history. The program investigates Death as the apex Renaissance man; the monster that devours us all. La comédie de la mort will feature live fiction readings, songs of Henri Duparc, two world premieres of American art song cycles, and an associated set of photographs.
